Alfred E. Ives

Alfred E. Ives, affectionately known as Al, passed away on September 1, 2026. He was born on July 25, 1947, in Claredon, Jamaica, West Indies, and will be remembered as a devoted man of faith, discipline, and hard work whose life was centered on family, service, and education.

Alfred earned a Master’s of Science degree in Math, an accomplishment that reflected both his intellect and his dedication to learning. He went on to serve for more than 33 years with the New York City Board of Education, giving his professional life to the work of teaching and guiding others. His excellence in education was recognized when he was listed in the National Honor Roll for Outstanding American Teacher for 2005–2006. He was also an honorary member of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, National Security, and Medicine.

Beyond his career, Alfred found joy in playing tennis and baseball. Those who knew him also knew the deeper foundations of his life: his love for God and his love for family. He was a man whose character was marked by discipline and a strong work ethic. Among the accomplishments he held most dear were earning his master’s degree, being a father and grandfather, and serving God.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Miriam DeSheers-Ives, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage. He also leaves behind his sons, Horace Ives, Alfred Ives, and Michael Ives. His legacy continues in his grandchildren, Dr. Dominique C. Ives, Brandon Ives, Sean Ives, Zane Ives, and Meison Ives, who carry forward his family name and the example of his life.

Alfred was preceded in death by his father, Joycelyn E. Ives; his mother, Mabel Bailey; and his son, Bruce Anthony. Their memory remained part of the story of his life, and he now rests with those who went before him.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on September 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church, 5330 Lakeland Highlands Rd, Lakeland, FL 33813. A Celebration of Life will follow from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the same location.

Alfred E. Ives will be remembered with love, gratitude, and respect for the life he lived and the many people he touched through his faith, his work, and his devotion to those closest to him.
